Comprised of three volumes, Earth Rising: Messages from the Pale Blue Dot presents a cross-section of the human experience. The album consists of new audio works that express our boundless imagination and longing to connect, our contradictions and compromises, and the enduring will to survive, and create meaning in precarious times. Volume I is released across digital platforms in June 2025.
Earth Rising is inspired by the Golden Record, which was launched into the solar system in 1977. It was an audio/visual time capsule of Earth, presenting carefully selected sounds and images to other life forms across space. Earth Rising keeps its intentions on the ground, exploring the complexity and depth of what it means to be human.
Travel from a mythologised St Vincent to a colony on Mars. Hear an alternative origin story from Yorùbá cosmology. Meditate on the power of the singular human voice. Reflect on the relationship between rock carvers and ravers. Examine ideology, and look deeply at love.
Volume II will be released in 2026 and Volume III in 2027.

In the 1970s, the Golden Record was created to introduce humanity to extraterrestrial life. Half a century later, Artangel presents Earth Rising, a concept album that introduces humanity to itself.

Inner Lithophony (feat. Cristian Heyne)

Sebastián Riffo Valdebenito shifts focus from the image of rock carvings to the sound of their making in his track Inner Lithophony. Recorded at the petroglyph site of Valle del Encanto in Chile, the piece begins with delicate taps that build into rhythmic drumming, eventually echoing the pulse of electronic dance music. Interwoven with these sounds are birdsong captured on-site—an ambient reminder of the natural world surrounding these ancient marks. Riffo Valdebenito suggests that our sense of rhythm and musical expression may be rooted in the primal act of carving—linking ancient tools and communications to the origins of percussion.

Sebastián Riffo Valdebenito desplaza el foco de la imagen de los grabados rupestres al sonido de su creación en su pieza Inner Lithophony. Grabada en el sitio de petroglifos del Valle del Encanto, en Chile, la obra comienza con suaves golpeteos que se transforman en percusiones rítmicas, hasta llegar a evocar el pulso de la música electrónica de baile. Entretejidos en estos sonidos aparecen cantos de aves capturados en el lugar: un recordatorio ambiental del mundo natural que rodea estas marcas ancestrales. Riffo Valdebenito sugiere que nuestro sentido del ritmo y de la expresión musical podría tener sus raíces en el acto primordial de tallar, vinculando herramientas y comunicaciones antiguas con los orígenes de la percusión.

"When I received the invitation, I was researching rock art in northern Chile, linked to pre-Hispanic cultures. I was reflecting on the ancestral, the primal—messages carved in languages we no longer understand, but that still pulse on rocky surfaces. Today, only fragments remain: enigmas, traces that endure through time. My sound piece emerged from that question: What do stones sound like? What memories do they hold? It felt natural to respond by returning to our primordial connection with stone—not only as the first support for human expression, as seen in Paleolithic rock art, but also as one of the earliest materials through which the human brain developed its capacity for creativity, rhythm, and symbolic thinking. I recorded at archaeological sites in northern Chile, tapping nearby stones to explore their resonance—always avoiding carved surfaces. The final piece layers textures and rhythms to evoke temporal depth and contemporaneity, through rhythmic, industrial, and technological polyphonies".

"Cuando recibí la invitación, me encontraba investigando sobre arte rupestre en el norte de Chile, vinculado a culturas prehispánicas. Reflexionaba sobre lo ancestral, lo primordial: mensajes tallados en lenguajes que ya no comprendemos, pero que aún laten sobre las superficies rocosas. Hoy solo quedan fragmentos: enigmas, huellas que perduran en el tiempo. Mi pieza sonora surgió de esa pregunta: ¿cómo suenan las piedras? ¿Qué memorias guardan? Me pareció natural responder volviendo a nuestra conexión primordial con la piedra, no solo como el primer soporte de la expresión humana, como lo muestra el arte rupestre paleolítico, sino también como uno de los primeros materiales a través del cual el cerebro humano desarrolló su capacidad de creatividad, ritmo y pensamiento simbólico. Grabé en sitios arqueológicos del norte de Chile, percutiendo piedras cercanas para explorar su resonancia, evitando siempre las superficies talladas. La pieza final superpone texturas y ritmos para evocar la profundidad temporal y la contemporaneidad, a través de polifonías rítmicas, industriales y tecnológicas".
